The decking at this customer’s property had been down for a good twenty years. Although the condition of the grooved decking boarding was poor, the underlying structure was fairly level and was structurally sound. The customer therefore wanted to replace the boards with a good-looking timber that would ‘weather-in’ nicely with the existing structure. After looking at my samples, she decided on Yellow Balau timber. This is a very good board for exterior use, which has a natural oil content to shrug off water. I removed the old decking and grafted in the new boards, making sure they all sat very level and adjusting them where necessary. I designed the new deck to also have a perimeter board, which helps with water runoff and looks very well.
