Bedside Cabinet (American Walnut)

There is nothing quite like working with solid wood and this piece of American Walnut came to me from a friend, who had it left over from another cabinet job. I made a bedside cabinet with it using traditional techniques and hand tools. The cabinet has a variety of special ‘old-school’ joints, all of which have been used over centuries for certain reasons. The frame is mortice and tenoned, the box is held together at the top corners with a blind dovetail and the top itself is secured using wooden ‘buttons’ which allows seasonal movement of the wood and avoids any splits. The dovetailed drawer and the whole cabinet is finished with oil. I am happy to take commissions on any item of free-standing furniture you have in mind, (for yourself, or maybe for a special present), just get in touch.
